One Year Later

Early Summer 1886

The warm breeze swept across the rolling plains, carrying with it the scent of wildflowers and fresh hay. Sarah stood on the gentle rise overlooking the ranch yard, one hand resting on the small of her back, the other holding a letter. The sun’s golden rays bathed everything in light, and the sounds of horses, cattle, and clucking hens filled the air. The Circle O had grown, and she marveled at the sight before her.

New barns and corrals dotted the landscape, and the house itself had expanded. A fresh coat of white paint gleamed on the clapboards, and a new room nestled cozily on the side, just waiting for the arrival of the little one growing inside her. Her belly, full and round, left her slightly breathless, but her heart swelled with anticipation. She rubbed the curve of her abdomen gently, a small smile curving her lips despite her aching feet and swollen ankles.

A flutter of movement beneath her hand brought a chuckle. “You’re as eager to see this world as I am to meet you,” she whispered softly to the baby. A ripple of discomfort tightened across her belly, but she dismissed it. It was too early to worry Kelly with such things.

Her gaze drifted down to the letter clutched in her fingers. She unfolded it once more, the familiar script bringing warmth to her heart.

Dearest Sarah,
We are so overjoyed to hear of your happiness and the blessings that have come your way. You have found exactly what you were seeking, and we are proud of you. We will come to visit once the baby is born and can’t wait to meet our grandchild. You are loved more than you know.
All our love, Mother and Father.

Tears pricked her eyes as she folded the letter carefully, holding it to her chest. A year ago, she had never imagined such peace could be hers, such a sense of belonging and fulfillment. God had blessed her richly.

The sound of hooves drew her attention. She turned to see Kelly riding in from the north pasture, his figure strong and steady on his blue roan, Blue. Dust trailed behind him as he guided his horse toward the ranch yard, his hat low over his brow. Her heart leapt as it always did when she saw him, her love for him as fierce and true as ever.

He spotted her on the hillock and lifted his hand in a wave. The sunlight caught the smile on his face, and warmth flooded through her. In that moment, all the troubles and heartaches of the past seemed like distant memories. She watched as he urged Blue into a faster gait, his long shadow stretching across the yard as he made his way toward her.

When he reached the bottom of the hill, he swung down from his saddle with practiced ease. He tied Blue’s reins to a nearby post and strode up the hill, his eyes never leaving hers. By the time he reached her, her cheeks were flushed, and her heart pounded with joy.

“Sarah,” he murmured, slipping his arm around her waist. He kissed her forehead gently, his thumb tracing a tender line across her cheek. “You’ve been standing here long?”

“Long enough to know that I’m the luckiest woman alive,” she said, leaning into him.

He chuckled, his deep voice rumbling through her. “I reckon I’m the lucky one.”

They stood together, his arm steady around her, both of them gazing out over the land they had built, the life they were nurturing together. The breeze rustled the grass around them, whispering promises of the future.

She sighed, content. “It feels like home, Kelly.”

He pressed a kiss to her temple. “That’s because it is, sweetheart. It always will be.”

Her heart swelled, and as they stood on that hillock, she silently thanked God for every moment, every blessing, and every promise yet to come.

Kelly shifted slightly, his hand settling protectively over her rounded belly. He looked down at her, his gaze softening. “You’ve been quiet this morning,” he said gently. “Everything all right?”

She nodded and smiled, holding up the letter. “I just heard from my parents. They’re coming to visit once the baby arrives.”

A flicker of surprise passed over his face, quickly replaced by a smile. “I’m glad to hear that, Sarah. I know how much that means to you.”

“It does,” she whispered, leaning her head against his shoulder. The sun warmed their faces, and the breeze carried the scent of blooming sage. “They finally understand that I’ve found my place. That I’m happy here.”

Kelly squeezed her hand. “You deserve all the happiness in the world.”

The sound of cattle lowing in the distance caught their attention. The ranch had changed in the past year, growing stronger with each passing month. The land once owned by Ludlow now stretched seamlessly beside the Circle O, adding new pastures, barns, and corrals. It hadn’t been easy, but the effort had paid off. The fields were filled with healthy cattle, and the barns echoed with the sounds of horses and chickens. New ranch hands helped ease the workload, and the once-burned barn had been rebuilt, stronger than before.

Ludlow was nothing but a shadow now, locked away in Huntsville prison. Justice had been served, and the weight of his crimes no longer darkened their days.

Kelly glanced toward the north pasture, his eyes scanning the horizon. “Ike said the new cattle are settling in well. We’ll be ready for the fall drive soon.”

Sarah smiled. “You and Ike have done an incredible job. The ranch is thriving.”

He chuckled, a low, warm sound. “Couldn’t have done it without you, Sarah.”

She laughed softly, rubbing her belly. “I don’t know how much help I’ve been these days. I feel like all I do is waddle around and complain about my feet.”

He tipped her chin up, his eyes twinkling with affection. “You’re carrying our future, darlin’. That’s more important than anything else.”

A flutter of emotion caught in her throat. Before she could speak, the sound of approaching hooves drew their attention. She squinted down the hill and smiled. A buggy rolled into the yard, the wheels kicking up dust in the early summer heat. Ike sat in the driver’s seat, his broad grin visible even from a distance. Beside him, Beth waved happily, her bonnet fluttering in the breeze.

“They’re here,” Sarah said, excitement bubbling in her chest.

Kelly offered his arm. “Shall we go greet them?”

“Let’s.”

They made their way down the hill slowly, Kelly’s hand never leaving her waist. As they reached the yard, Ike pulled the buggy to a stop and jumped down, helping Beth to the ground. Beth’s eyes sparkled with joy as she hurried over to Sarah, her hands immediately reaching for her friend’s.

“Oh, Sarah, it’s so good to see you!” Beth exclaimed.

Sarah grinned. “It’s good to see you too. How was the trip?”

“Smooth as butter,” Ike said, clapping Kelly on the back. “I swear, Beth drives that buggy better than I do.”

Beth blushed, then turned to Sarah with a secretive smile. “I have news.”

Sarah raised an eyebrow. “News?”

Beth’s cheeks flushed with happiness. “I’m expecting.”

A gasp escaped Sarah’s lips, and she clutched Beth’s hands tightly. “Beth! That’s wonderful!”

Kelly grinned and clapped Ike on the shoulder. “Congratulations, Ike. You’re going to be a great father.”

Ike’s ears turned red, but his eyes shone with pride. “Thanks, boss. We’re mighty excited.”

Sarah’s heart filled with joy, the weight of her own anticipation blending with the happiness she felt for her friends. They were all building new lives, new futures, rooted in love and faith.

As the sun climbed higher in the sky, the four of them stood in the yard, laughter and joy filling the air. The ranch was thriving, their friendships were strong, and the future promised even more blessings.

Sarah’s hand slipped into Kelly’s, and he squeezed it gently. In that moment, everything felt perfectly right.

*

The afternoon sun began its slow descent, casting a golden glow over the ranch. The four of them stood in the yard, chatting and laughing, the joy of shared friendship warming their hearts. The future seemed to stretch before them like a wide-open prairie, full of endless promise.

“Come on inside,” Sarah said, her smile as bright as the summer sky. “You must be tired and hungry after your trip.”

Beth linked her arm through Sarah’s. “I wouldn’t say no to a bit of shade and some of that lemonade you make so well.”

Kelly and Ike exchanged grins, then followed the women into the house. The interior was cool and welcoming, the scent of fresh bread lingering in the air. Sarah and Beth moved to the kitchen, while Kelly and Ike settled themselves in the sitting room, talking ranch business in low voices.

As Sarah poured lemonade into glasses, a twinge of discomfort rippled across her abdomen. She paused for a moment, taking a steadying breath, her hand instinctively resting on her belly.

Beth’s eyes narrowed with concern. “Sarah? Are you all right?”

Sarah forced a smile and nodded. “Just a little discomfort. It’s nothing to worry about.”

Beth frowned but didn’t press further. Instead, she carried the glasses of lemonade into the sitting room, giving Sarah a moment to herself. As soon as Beth left, another sharp pang struck her, this one stronger. She gripped the edge of the counter, inhaling deeply.

Not now, she thought. It’s too early to worry anyone.

But as she straightened, she knew she couldn’t ignore it any longer. The baby was coming. Her heart raced with equal parts excitement and anxiety.

Beth returned just then, her eyes immediately catching the flicker of pain on Sarah’s face. Her expression shifted to one of alarm. “Sarah, it’s time, isn’t it?”

Sarah nodded, a mixture of fear and anticipation in her eyes. “I think so.”

Without hesitation, Beth set the glasses down and took Sarah’s arm. “Let’s get you settled. Don’t you worry—I’ve got this under control.”

Sarah allowed Beth to guide her toward the bedroom, the discomfort growing with each step. As they passed through the sitting room, Kelly’s gaze snapped up, his brow furrowing as he took in Sarah’s pale face.

“Sarah?” He was on his feet in an instant, his voice tight with concern.

She managed a weak smile. “It’s happening, Kelly.”

For a moment, panic flickered in his eyes, but Beth stepped in, her voice steady and firm. “Kelly, you and Ike need to stay out of the way. I’ll take care of her.”

Kelly ran a hand through his hair, clearly torn between worry and the need to do something. Ike clapped him on the shoulder. “Come on, boss. Let’s give the ladies room to work.”

Kelly nodded reluctantly, his eyes never leaving Sarah. “I’ll be right outside, sweetheart. I’m not going anywhere.”

She gave his hand a reassuring squeeze before Beth led her into the bedroom. The door closed softly, leaving Kelly and Ike standing in the hallway, helpless.

Inside the room, Beth helped Sarah onto the bed, propping pillows behind her back. Sarah’s breaths came in short, quick gasps as the waves of pain increased. She gritted her teeth, gripping the edge of the quilt.

“You’re doing great, Sarah,” Beth said, her voice calm and soothing. “Just remember to breathe. You’re stronger than you know.”

Sweat beaded on Sarah’s brow as another contraction hit. She closed her eyes, whispering a silent prayer. Lord, give me strength.

Time became a blur of pain and effort. Beth worked diligently, her hands sure and steady, offering encouragement with every contraction. Outside the door, Sarah could hear Kelly pacing, his boots thudding softly against the wooden floor. The sound of his worry was oddly comforting.

As the hours wore on, exhaustion crept into her limbs, but she refused to give up. Beth wiped her forehead with a cool cloth, her voice unwavering. “You’re almost there, Sarah. Just a little more.”

With a final surge of determination, Sarah pushed through the pain, a cry escaping her lips. And then, suddenly, there was a new sound—a thin, wailing cry that filled the room with life.

Sarah’s heart swelled, tears streaming down her face as she collapsed back against the pillows. The room spun with relief and joy as Beth carefully wrapped the tiny, squirming bundle in a soft blanket.

“You did it, Sarah,” Beth whispered, her own eyes shining. “You have a beautiful baby girl.”

Sarah reached out with trembling hands, and Beth gently placed the newborn in her arms. The baby’s tiny face scrunched up before relaxing, her little fingers curling tightly.

Sarah’s tears flowed freely as she gazed down at her daughter. “Hello, sweetheart,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “Welcome to the world.”

    6. Can I ask why they didn’t call for a doctor or a midwife? Why was Beth delivering her baby? I wish it included Kelly meeting the baby. I love your stories however feel they end abruptly and unfulfilled as do many other books in this genre. Is there any specific reason for that?

      1. Thank you so much for reading and for sharing your thoughts! In that scene, the characters were caught in an urgent moment with no time to reach a doctor, which is why Beth stepped in. I appreciate you wishing to see Kelly meet the baby—that’s such a sweet detail, and I’ll keep it in mind for future stories. As for the endings, I tend to keep them a bit open-ended to leave room for hope and imagination, but I truly value your feedback. Thank you again for caring enough to reach out!

    7. Would love if this was a series! It was a great story and I hate to have it end! Now I’ll be wondering about how Beth and Like turn out, how many kids they all have and how Shadow made out as a stud!

  3. I agree with Jacqueline. I’m also happy to hear about the Lord and faith throughout the story. Kelly and Sarah were definitely suited to each other; it just took them both some time to realize that they were too used to feeling pity for their circumstances instead of realizing how much they should be thankful for. Thanks to you for such an engaging story.
